Townsville universities given five stars in national ratings

Townsville’s two universities are at the top of the class when it comes to graduates getting jobs.

James Cook University has been awarded top marks for graduate employment for the seventh year in a row by The Good Universities Guide, receiving a five-star rating.

Central Queensland University also received a five-star rating in the category.

The figures show 74.9 per cent of undergraduates from James Cook University find full-time employment within four months of graduating, higher than the national average of 69.5 per cent.

JCU Vice-Chancellor Sandra Harding said the ratings underlined the university’s strong performance in teaching and research.

“We know that our graduates are highly sought after, and to receive a five-star rating for graduate employment seven years in a row confirms JCU is providing its students with a high-quality education and very strong career prospects,” she said.

Chris Lester, chief executive of the Good Education Group, which publishes the guide, said it was a great achievement for JCU to receive the five-star rating for seven years in a row.

“It’s promising to see regional universities providing students with a great student experience, backed by strong graduate outcomes,” he said.

JCU also received five stars for learner engagement and in a range of categories across 14 fields of study.

The university’s dentistry and veterinary sciences graduates had the highest employment rates in the country, while JCU’s medicine graduates also had a 100 per cent employment rate.

Third-year medical student Emily Everson was not surprised by JCU’s rating.

“I think a lot of people at JCU are aware that it’s a really practical university and it has good job results,” she said.

“It takes away a lot of anxiety, I think.”

Meanwhile, CQU received five-star results for graduate employment, median graduate salary and social equity.

CQU Vice-Chancellor Scott Bowman, who in the past criticised the guide’s ratings, said the company behind the publication used an improved methodology based on direct data sources.

“The Good Universities Guide has revealed that CQUni is the best university in Australia for full-time employment in the fields of teacher education, and architecture and building,” he said.

“The guide confirms that our strongest field of study is engineering, with five stars in the full-time employment, learner engagement, starting salary and skills development measures.”
